Have you recently bought plantation window shutters that you can use at home? Indeed, those shutters are quite nice to look at, and depending on their quality, can be last for many years. However, in order to make sure that they can really stand the test of time, you should do your fair share as well.

Shutter maintenance is quite easy, and even if you are not familiar with it, you would eventually get the hang of it as months and years pass by. While you may need to do a little more with wooden window shutters, they are still much easier to clean than say, curtains or blinds.

Here are some four maintenance tips for outdoor plantation shutters:

  1. Know the parts of a shutter – The very first thing you should consider is to know and be familiar with the different parts of your custom plantation shutters. Some parts include the shutter panel, a hang/strip frame, louvers, the stile and the tilt rod. Knowing these parts is key especially when you are also looking for maintenance tips and how-tos.

  2. Clean it regularly – The most effective way to prolong the life of your window shutters is to clean them regularly. Use a soft cloth or feather duster to take out the dust that usually accumulates on the louvers.

  3. Tighten or loosen tension screws as needed – These are the screws that adjust the tightness or looseness of the entire shutter. Use a Philips head screwdriver to do the job.

  4. Never use the tilt rod in adjusting the louvers – One of the most common mistakes in adjusting shutters is that most people use the tilt rod to adjust all the louvers. Doing this may loosen the screws on each louver, and that is not good. The proper way is to hold on to the stile or the frame of the shutter, and a louver and slowly bring it up or down.

Most plantation shutters cost a few hundred dollars depending on the quality of the product. That is why you should always treat it with care. While these items are covered by warranty, you should also check until when you can avail free repair services.
